1900's "Jazz and Ragtime"
Music in the 1900's was quite limited, to say the least. Jazz and ragtime were the main genres for music. Around that time in the south, steamboats were travelling through the Mississippi Rive. Bands and musicians used them to their advantage, by getting the captains to allow them to preform on the boats. This led to more people finding out about about the musicians, and helped them to become more popular.

1910's
This was a bitter sweet time for Americans, with the End of WW1, some Americans were excited. But the end was also a burden for many who had lost loved ones in the war. Jazz artists in the south started to leave for the North, seeking new opportunities and greater success. Around 1917, ragtime music died out. And tensions were high with laboring and housing units, which lead to race riots killing hundreds of people and burning thousands. Because of the racial discriminations, music made by African Americans was only played for other African Americans in New York or Chicago.
